What is English as a New Language?

Formerly “ESL….the English as a New Language Program is a free-standing language arts program for students identified as English Language Learners (ELLs). The goal of our program is to help students to use English to accomplish their academic, personal and social goals with the same proficiency as native speakers of English. We work toward this goal by providing instruction and practice at the student’s level in the five fundamental areas of language; Speaking/Listening, Reading, Writing, and Grammar.

    How Does ENL Help?

ENL classes are very small, and students are grouped by ELPD level/ability.  Students can practice their English in a friendly, non-threatening environment. The ENL teacher collaborates with ELL classroom teachers to help the students to succeed in their grade level content areas and to help the child adapt to all aspects of the school culture & experience.

    How Does It Work?

When school begins in September, the ENL teacher meets with new students to determine their English level. They will be placed in groups according to their grade level (2 continuous grades only) and their English ability. In NYS there are 5 levels of ELPD: Entering, Emerging, Transitioning, Commanding, & Expanding. Based on the results of the NYSITELL (for new students- anytime of the year) or the NYSESLAT in the spring (returning students), ENL teachers are able to determine students'  proficiency levels and amount of minutes for services needed.
